How we serve Devon

The honest Devon serving model

Devon runs two distinct hospitality coasts plus two upland markets. North Devon (Ilfracombe, Croyde, Saunton, Woolacombe, Lynton) is the surf-coast cluster with summer holiday park demand and a small but visible restaurant scene tied to the surf trade. South Devon (Salcombe, Dartmouth, Torquay, Brixham, Paignton, Totnes) covers the English Riviera and the historic harbour towns, with a deeper hotel cluster and a wedding-venue market that runs from May to September. Dartmoor and the Devon side of Exmoor add country pub and country house demand year-round, with peaks in summer and at Christmas.

Chefs Bay does not have an office in Devon. We serve the county through a national live-in chef bench, with booking and compliance handled by our Liverpool team. Drive time from Liverpool to Plymouth sits at roughly 6 hours and from London to Plymouth is roughly 4 hours; daily-commute coverage is not viable from any of our existing hubs. Live-in is the operational model for Devon at the same scale as Cornwall. Chefs travel to Devon with accommodation arranged (staff cottage, holiday park accommodation, or hotel staff room), stay on site for the full booking, and are paid travel-inclusive day rates.

Every chef we send into a Devon care home, school, or nursery setting holds Enhanced DBS with the relevant Barred List check before the first shift. Chefs for coastal hotels, holiday parks, country house hotels, and Dartmoor pub kitchens hold Right to Work, Level 2 Food Safety, and Allergen Awareness as a baseline. All Chefs Bay workers are on full PAYE. Operators booking by February or March for the summer peak get the deepest bench; calls placed in late June for an August start almost always face a thinner pool.

Devon live-in chef bench

How live-in chef cover works for Devon operators

The standard staffing model for Devon coastal hotels, holiday parks, and country house venues. Chefs travel for the season with accommodation provided.

Best fit

North Devon and South Devon coastal hotel head chef cover for the Easter-to-October summer peak. Holiday park brigade hire (4-12 chefs per park) at Devon Cliffs, Parkdean Sandford, and similar sites. Country house hotel head chef cover for wedding-season placements (May to September). Dartmoor and Exmoor country pub head chef cover for both summer trade and the Christmas-to-NYE programme.

How rates work

Travel-inclusive day rates are agreed at the moment of booking. Mileage at HMRC rates (45p per mile to 10,000 miles), accommodation arrangement (provided by the venue or arranged through us), and an on-site living allowance are all priced into the day rate before the chef leaves home. The quote is the invoice.

For Cornwall placements, see the Cornwall page — same model. For festival-specific planning, see the 8-week festival planner.

FAQ

Devon chef hire: common questions

Do you have an office in Devon?

No. We do not have a physical office in Devon. Devon placements run through our national live-in chef bench, with booking and compliance handled from our Liverpool office. We will be honest about this rather than fake a Devon address to win a search-engine click.

How does live-in chef cover work for Devon hotels and holiday parks?

For placements of four weeks or longer, we deploy chefs from our national bench who travel to Devon with accommodation provided by the venue (live-in staff cottage, holiday park accommodation, or hotel staff room) or arranged through us. The chef stays on site for the duration of the booking, returns home between rotations, and is paid travel-inclusive day rates that include mileage at HMRC rates and a living allowance. This is the standard model for the Devon summer season at coastal hotels, holiday parks operated by Parkdean and Haven, country house hotels, and the surf-coast restaurant clusters at Croyde and Woolacombe.

What is the realistic response time for chef cover in Devon?

For planned bookings of two weeks or more, we confirm a named chef inside 5 working days of brief receipt. During peak season (June, July, August) the bench is thin and the realistic window can stretch to 10 working days. We do not commit to same-day or next-day cover in Devon. The drive time from Liverpool to Plymouth is roughly 6 hours and from London is roughly 4 hours, so a same-day parachute is not credible. We will be honest about this on the call.

Which areas of Devon do you cover?

North Devon coast (Ilfracombe, Croyde, Saunton, Woolacombe, Lynton, Lynmouth), South Devon coast (Salcombe, Dartmouth, Torquay, Brixham, Paignton, Totnes), Dartmoor (Tavistock, Princetown, Chagford), and the Devon side of Exmoor. For Plymouth city centre placements, ring the booking line — Plymouth is at the western edge of our Devon coverage and merges with the Cornwall live-in pool.

Are your Devon chefs DBS-checked and PAYE compliant?

Every chef we send into a Devon care home, school, or nursery setting holds Enhanced DBS with the relevant Barred List check before the first shift. Chefs for Devon coastal hotels, country house hotels, holiday parks, and event sites hold Right to Work, Level 2 Food Safety, and Allergen Awareness as a baseline, with DBS on request for any setting that involves protected adults or children. All Chefs Bay workers are employed on full PAYE.

Do you cover Devon Cliffs, Parkdean Sandford, and other large holiday parks?

Yes. Devon Cliffs (Haven) is one of the largest holiday parks in the UK and runs head chef and brigade cover from March through October. Parkdean Sandford and the wider Devon Parkdean estate book chef hire across the same window. Holiday park brigades typically run 4 to 12 chefs depending on park size and food and beverage outlet count; the live-in bench is exactly the right structural fit because parks usually provide accommodation for live-in seasonal staff as standard.

Why use a national agency rather than a Devon-specific one?

Because the Devon chef shortage is national-bench-shaped. Devon trains a small number of locally-resident chefs relative to summer demand, and the existing local recruiters draw from the same thin pool. The advantage of our national bench plus live-in framing is that we can place a chef from London, Liverpool, or Manchester into a Devon coastal hotel for a 12-to-16-week summer season with accommodation arranged. The larger Devon hotel and holiday park groups have always staffed this way.
